First week in Kenya

First week in Kenya

For our minor program International Entrepreneurship and Development at the TU Delft we, Line, Christine and Coco, will represent Muima in Kenya from October 2018 to February 2019. We will design a new product and implement a new plastic recycling technique in the factory. We want to create possibilities to make more products out of plastic waste. This way, we try to contribute in solving the plastic problem in Kenya!

We have been in Kenya for almost a week now and we feel very welcome! In this first week we have already seen and done a lot. When we arrived in Mumias the first day, we went directly to Wilson’s factory. We were welcomed with open arms and he showed us around. Everything looked very good and people were working hard, producing the toy cars. Because the business is going so well, Wilson is busy building his own house next to the factory, so he will never have to leave!

After the tour we presented our design of the new product. Wilson was immediately very enthusiastic about it and came up with some extra useful ideas. After this first meeting he wrote us:

“The first impression has been perfect!”

The following days we continued with our SolidWorks model, that we will send to Mukanda, the man who will make the mold for our new product. However, we were unable to connect to the TU Delft VPN connection. To inform Wilson about this problem we called him. Luckily, Mukanda was on his way to the factory. So we went straight to the factory as well. This worked out perfectly for us.

We met Mukanda and he was so kind to lend us his laptop with a working SolidWorks program. We now have agreed to meet this Sunday again to improve the design with Mukanda, Wilson and our team. On Monday we will visit Mukanda in Kakamega to start building the mold hopefully.

A good prospect!
